چکیده

A historic specimen described for the first time revealed important autapomorphic characters, permitting definition of a new species, Javelinadactylus sagebieli gen. n. et sp. n., which represents second toothless species from Javelina Formation, Big Bend National Park West Texas (United States America). The remains J. (Azhdarchoidea: Tapejaridae) were found in 1986, but never properly studied, and its taxonomic affinity undefined. description is based on partially articulated skull mandible, offer information anatomy single azhdarchoid pterosaur. exhibit large nasoantorbital fenestra, rostral index medium value assigned to clade Thalassodrominae, group tapejarid pterosaurs that reported exclusively Romualdo Formation Brazil, with only two genera known. Thalassodromines are characterized by typical cranial configuration jaws high wide premaxilla bar, formed sub-parallel or parallel borders. here record Tapejaridae Maastrichtian North America, morphology taxon increase richest diversity during end Late Cretaceous, suggesting tapejarids still diversifying Maastrichtian.

A small azhdarchoid pterosaur from the latest Cretaceous, the age of flying giants

Pterosaur fossils from the Campanian-Maastrichtian of North America have been reported from the continental interior, but few have been described from the west coast. The first pterosaur from the Campanian Northumberland Formation (Nanaimo Group) of Hornby Island, British Columbia, is represented here by a humerus, dorsal vertebrae (including three fused notarial vertebrae), and other fragments...

A New Small-Bodied Azhdarchoid Pterosaur from the Lower Cretaceous of England and Its Implications for Pterosaur Anatomy, Diversity and Phylogeny

BACKGROUND Pterosaurs have been known from the Cretaceous sediments of the Isle of Wight (southern England, United Kingdom) since 1870. We describe the three-dimensional pelvic girdle and associated vertebrae of a small near-adult pterodactyloid from the Atherfield Clay Formation (lower Aptian, Lower Cretaceous). Despite acknowledged variation in the pterosaur pelvis, previous studies have not ...

A new toothed pterosaur (Pterodactyloidea: Anhangueridae) from the Early Cretaceous Romualdo Formation, NE Brazil.

A new species of pterosaur, Maaradactylus kellneri gen. nov., sp. nov. (Archosauria: Pterosauria) from the Romualdo Formation (Aptian/Albian), is herein described. The specimen (MPSC R 2357) was found at Sítio São Gonçalo, Santana do Cariri city (State of Ceará, northeast Brazil) and consists of the skull, atlas and axis, and represents one of the largest skulls of the Anhangueridae from the Ar...

A New Azhdarchid Pterosaur from the Late Cretaceous of the Transylvanian Basin, Romania: Implications for Azhdarchid Diversity and Distribution

We describe a new taxon of medium-sized (wing span ca. 3 m) azhdarchid pterosaur from the Upper Cretaceous Transylvanian Basin (Sebeş Formation) of Romania. This specimen is the most complete European azhdarchid yet reported, comprising a partially articulated series of vertebrae and associated forelimb bones. The new taxon is most similar to the Central Asian Azhdarcho lancicollis Nessov but p...

A New Crested Pterosaur from the Early Cretaceous of Spain: The First European Tapejarid (Pterodactyloidea: Azhdarchoidea)

BACKGROUND The Tapejaridae is a group of unusual toothless pterosaurs characterized by bizarre cranial crests. From a paleoecological point of view, frugivorous feeding habits have often been suggested for one of its included clades, the Tapejarinae. So far, the presence of these intriguing flying reptiles has been unambiguously documented from Early Cretaceous sites in China and Brazil, where ...
